Kate Cornwall is Volcano Vibe Collective's resident Glass artist most Fridays.
Kate says - “When I began working with glass, I felt the connection to the medium immediately. The vibrancy and sophistication of colours, the variety, and the complexity of processes used to create glass art to me, lend themselves to the subject matter.
There’s something that draws you in, and once ensnared; nurtures, challenges, surprises and confounds you, all at the same time. There’s a high degree of technical know-how required to work in glass and sometimes I think there must be an irrational eccentricity in artists who want to work with a product that is so time-consuming, unforgiving, to produce something which itself is flawless.
I use a variety of techniques when working with glass, from lost wax casting, kiln forming, and working with a glassblower in her studio, to capture the desired outcome.
I love being in the outdoors, with the beautiful countryside around me, and I find I’m drawn to, and influenced by the colours and patterns found in nature. This can be seen in my more recent ‘Wildflowers’ pendants where I have used the vibrancy of colour and flexibility of glass medium, create a fusion of New Zealand nature and contemporary design.”
Kate makes a range of bespoke pieces especially for Volcano Vibe and is happy to chat if you are interested in designing something special.
With her newly built studio nestled between Ohakune and Raetihi, glass workshops are on the agenda for 2022 ... so if you’re interested you can talk with Kate, she’s in store most Fridays or phone on 021 386 328.
