Horopito wild pepper seasoning is an exciting wild spice that is recommended to use on wild venison, duck, rabbit and other red meats.

Its is native to New Zealand and enhances almost every type of meat with its unique taste.

Horopito is indigenous to New Zealand and traditionally used by Maori for medicinal purposes to support and reduce the effects of stomach upsets.

What is horopito?

Also known as 'peppertree', Horopito grows in its name place, Horopito, Ruapehu.
Horopito leaves have traditionally been used in Maori medicine - taken orally or applied topically in the case of skin ailments of fungal infections.

Horopito was used for treating stomach ache and poor circulation.

External uses include fungal infections such as Candida albicans, ringworm, wounds, cuts, burns and bruising. Fresh leaves were also chewed for toothache. 

The main biologically active constituent of Horopito is known as polygodial - this is a component of the “hot taste”, exhibiting significant anti-fungal and antibacterial activity. 

Most importantly Horopito, tastes great as well as having health benefits.  Horopito is an interesting alternative to black pepper.

Recommended to use on roast vegetables, steak and barbecues.
